Today I visited The Pilates Centre of Ballet Memphis at 1789 Kirby in East Memphis. I took a great mat class with Tamara Hoffmann. The Pilates Centre of Ballet Memphis teaches the STOTT PILATES® method mat and equipment classes - groups, privates, and semi-privates.
Pilates is an excellent way to stay in shape, prevent injury, and improve alignment, balance and strength. The STOTT® method focuses on the five basic principles of Pilates: breathing, pelvic placement, ribcage placement, shoulder blade placement and mobility, and head and cervical spine placement. This might seem like a lot to think about, but when you get it all in line it provides amazing results and and overall feeling of well-being. One fellow classmate today told me Pilates is especially helpful as you age, in keeping you flexible, balanced and strong. But it really is a wonderful workout for all ages and levels, dancers and athletes or not. Crystal Brothers said that practicing Pilates has extended her dance career by years.
Our own company dancers Crystal Brothers (Tues. and Wed. at 5:45 pm mat), Julie Niekrasz (Thurs. 5:45 pm mat), Stephanie Mei Hom, and Rachel Shumake, as well as our Ballet Mistress Tamara Hoffmann (Monday nights, Wednesdays and Saturdays) and former professional dancer Katie Monaghan (pictured above) are some of our instructors.
There will be a social at the Pilates Centre this Friday April 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Drinks and food will be provided. Bring a friend, enter to win a free mat class, and take part in a demonstration to see what it's all about.
Contact the Pilates Centre at 901-753-4177 or visit balletmemphis.org/pilates for more information. We look forward to seeing you!
