Raising the barre on opening night

Last night I attended opening night of Family Matters. It was so great to see the whole show come together after seeing the rehearsal process. The costumes, lights, and sets added to the whole, and the theme of family ran strong through the night. Especially striking are the streamer curtain and lighting in the final piece set to Beck's music, High Lonesome.

Before the show I attended a special reception for Ballet Memphis' new social group, entrée, and new young philanthropy group, Raising the Barre. I ran into several friends and former students of the Ballet Memphis School (Erin Ostrow, Rosie Abell, Jessica Johnson, me - Joan Biddle, and Gretchen McLennon are pictured below).

These groups are a great way to get involved with the ballet and meet new people, plus get perks like free events and ballet tickets. Contact Maggie Griesbeck at to join.

AND, there are still two more performances of Family Matters this weekend – if you haven’t yet, go see it!
